The method was validated following the guidelines outlined in USP General Chapter, Validation of Compendial Methods. Zinc is separated from transition metals and quantified using absorbance detection at 530 nm. The analysis method uses a mixed-mode ion-exchange column, pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate (PDCA) as the mobile phase, and 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol) (PAR) as the post column reagent. Methods:We developed a method to assay zinc oxide in sunscreens following the newly revised United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Zinc Oxide monograph that includes a method for zinc determination using ion chromatography (IC) with visible absorbance detection, which is detailed in USP General Chapter. Our goal was to develop an assay of zinc oxide in sunscreens. Zinc oxide is one of the active ingredients approved by FDA for use in sunscreens for both UVA and UVB protection. Purpose:Classified as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug product in the USA, sunscreen is regulated by the U.S.
